A famous Italian Marxist cartoonist was commissioned to create an image that would sum up what people might remember of Italy in 1990. Unfortunately his choice of an opera singer standing next to a football bandwagon was thought to be rather too cynical by the idealists at FIFA. “Football is by the fans, for the fans,” they grumped. Plus Pavarotti might have been offended and they were hoping for a nice slice of his CD sales.
