In the early 1970s many idealistic young Germans, wanting to distance themselves from their parents’ generation, looked to glamorous left-leaning full-back Paul Breitner for guidance. In this first attempt at the 1974 poster, the design agency thought that Breitner, with his Maoist views and funky hair, would be a memorable icon for the finals. Sadly, within a few years Paul forsook his revolutionary overlapping to become a grouchy midfield anchor-man whose dislike for authority extended no further than bookings for dissent.
