1966 World Cup poster

England was officially swinging by the time the 1966 finals came around so the country’s top Fleet Street cartoonist, Smadge, was commissioned to create an image of the Beatles for the official World Cup poster. The Football Association got cold feet, deciding that the Beatles were not suitable role models for young people, what with their long hair, dolly birds and financial independence from their parents. The Swinging London theme was maintained during the tournament, however, by official FA souvenir stalls selling bottled peasouper fog and “I met Jack the Ripper” bowler hats.
